Spiritual Allies for Dismantling Racism

Please Join Me in Working to Dismantle Racism and Make a Difference in Our World!

In March, we are starting our new “Spiritual Allies for Dismantling Racism” (SADR) program.

We face enormous challenges of racism and social injustice in America today. With the SADR program, Unity of Phoenix is taking a stand to find answers to the important question: “What can we do to be the change we want to see in the world and to help dismantle racism now?”

This program is a start. We hope to open up a dialogue about racism and to provide healing, education and understanding that will help us create a world that works for all. The goal is simply to start the process and be committed to dismantling systematic racism.

We will be using some of the work on dismantling racism that has already been developed and implemented by Unity Center of San Diego and other Unity churches and centers, and in various communities and countries around the world.

Read below for an outline of how the program will work.

NOTE: Registration for Phase One is now closed.

The SADR Program – Getting Started (Phase One)

Phase One:
We will begin Phase One by hosting five Zoom meetings for Black Allies/Allies of Color and White Allies. The two groups will meet separately for this portion of the program so that each can actively dig into their own attitudes and/or prejudices about race. Both groups will explore books, articles and videos, and have open conversations on how to end racism.

Black Allies/Allies of Color will be hosted by Rev. Richard Maraj and Rev. Kim O’Connor and will talk about aspects of institutional racism and what it’s like to be a person of color in America.

White Allies will be hosted by Rev. Lori Fleming and Carol Burnett Vest and will learn more about the systemic racism that people of color face in America today.

The meetings will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. every other Wednesday on the following dates:
March 10 and 24; April 7 and 21; and May 5.

The deadline for sign-up is Sunday, March 7.

Participants for both groups will agree to:
• Commit to attending all five Zoom sessions;
• Complete the assigned reading, homework and videos at home.

Attendance at all sessions is important to create support for each other, allow everyone to “become comfortable with being uncomfortable,” and to experience authentic growth and learning about systemic racism in our country.

The SADR Program – Phases Two and Three

Phase Two
In Phase Two, we will bring both groups together for honest, open, loving conversation where we will all explore — together — ways to end racism. Dates for those meetings will be announced at a later time.

Phase Three:
In Phase Three, we will sponsor a “Spiritual Allies Book Club” where, as Allies Together, we will explore the works of a wide range of authors to increase our “racial literacy”: the knowledge, skills, awareness and dispositions to talk about race and racism. The books and dates for meeting times will be announced at a later date.
