A Quiet Mind: The Secret to Success

A Quiet Mind: The Secret to Success

We all want success. Whether its financial wealth, loving relationships, a close-knit family, a fulfilling career, greater health and vitality, overcoming the past, or being a more spiritual, positive and/or happier person, everyone is always searching for the secret to success. And that search can be endless! From working harder to attending a weekend seminar, from working with a personal coach to reading the latest self-help book, from thinking and planning to analyzing and reasoning, we leave no stone unturned in our pursuit of success. In our hectic-paced, constantly-busy, hamster-on-a-wheel society we tend to be so overly focused on a faster, higher, better way of life that we often overlook the greatest secret to success: a quiet mind.

In his book, Tools for Titans, Tim Ferriss interviewed 200 successful people from all areas of life, ranging from super celebs and athletes to Special Operations commanders and biochemists. Of all their routines and habits, the most consistent among all of them was some form of daily meditation or mindfulness practice. The world-class performers he interviewed credit their success to the regular practice of quieting their minds, more than 80% through some form of guided meditation.

A crowded and stressed mind blocks the flow of peace, clarity, wisdom and creativity more than we realize. A quiet mind, on the other hand, is more calm and relaxed, more clear, and opens a path to deeper levels of wisdom, understanding, insight and intuition.

As such, learning to quiet our minds is one of the most restorative, renewing and transforming activities we can learn how to do. It is through a quiet mind that our physical, mental and emotional lives are improved. Learning to quiet the mind not just an important life skill, but it is a powerful spiritual practice. Quietness is the gateway to tranquility.

Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you.” That’s the place we need to look! We need to stop looking outside ourselves for answers of any kind … whether it’s regarding relationships, finances, employment or health. The most important thing we can do is to look within for the answers, and to be still and listen to the voice of God.

The Bible reminds us that the way to be transform our lives is to “renew our minds,” which is done by quieting the mind, being still, and opening the path to a more conscious connection to the fullness of God’s power and presence.

We’ve all been so conditioned to stay busy and to do, earn and achieve more that most of us are actually a little uncomfortable with silence. Yet all it takes is a sincere heart, a willingness to still our minds and practice. In Philippians, Paul said, “Let the same mind that was in Christ Jesus be in you.” Jesus had a quiet mind, a peaceful mind, a forgiving, grateful, giving mind ... a mind of service. That same mind is fully available to each of us, as well. But we can’t get there by thinking our way to it. It’s not about thinking; it’s about quieting. When we quiet our human minds, we open ourselves to the mind of God.

Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and say to yourself, “I am breathing in peace and breathing out peace” or “I am breathing in love and breathing out love.” Do this short exercise for one to two minutes four or five times a day. It will begin to quiet and relax your mind, and open you to greater peace, clarity, wisdom and understanding.

Make quieting your mind in this way a consistent, daily practice. It truly is the secret to success!
