Summary Sheet -
Week 2
Fast
Points:
Lent is a period of spiritual preparation. It is a time of retreating
from the things of the world to help us release and cleanse ourselves
of anything that is blocking us from knowing the presence and power
of God. Prayer and fasting are important practices for cleansing
and disciplining the mind and body to become more receptive to
the Christ.
Fasting is more than depriving the body of food. It is a spiritual
discipline that helps us develop greater self-control, awareness
and a stronger commitment to God. Fasting from food helps cleanse
the body. Fasting from negative words, thoughts and ideas helps cleanse
our minds to be more open to God.
What are you holding on to that keeps you from feeling the
presence of God?
What is the thing that you need to fast from the most?
Practice:
- No complaining for 21 days. Take life as it comes being
grateful to live through and experience what is before you.
If you catch yourself complaining about anything forgive yourself
and start over at day one.
- Before you start anything, check in with yourself. Where
is your willingness and what is your intention?
- If you find yourself feeling sad, upset, hurt or angry use
the power of denials to move beyond it. Say, ‘This feeling
is real but it does not have any power over me.’
Questions:
- What thoughts most affect to your peace of mind and happiness?
- Are there areas of your life in which you could use greater
discipline and self-control?
- How can your thoughts support you in this practice?
- How would your life change if you fasted from negativity
and complaining?
- Is there a connection between discipline and living a Christ-centered
life?
Affirmation:
'Fast'
God is the focus of my life. I fast from any negativity that distracts
me from knowing my oneness with God. I have the spiritual discipline
to abstain from words and thoughts that are not in line with God's
will for me.
I, _________________, fast from fear, lack and unworthiness. I focus
my heart and mind on God and the abundant blessings in my life.
Amen.
