Unity of Phoenix Soleri BellsAbout the history of our Soleri Bells in the middle of the Petersen Grove

The bells were donated by Dr. John McBride, a psychiatrist at St. Joseph's hospital. Dr. McBride founded a healing center in Payson for cancer patients. Family members bought the bells in memory of loved ones who have passed on.

Dr. McBride wanted the bells to have a special home after his death, so he donated them to Unity of Phoenix. The configuration had to be enlarged to accommodate all the bells and the design was constructed to resemble a cross from every angle. At the foot of the flagpole is a dedication plaque for "Building the Dream" and, below it, a time capsule has been buried.

Unity was founded in 1889 in Kansas City, Missouri, by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore after Myrtle's remarkable healing using prayer and affirmations.

Myrtle and Charles FillmoreIn 1886, Myrtle Fillmore became very ill. She thought there was nothing she could do about it, because she had been sick since she was a little girl.

Myrtle and her husband, Charles, went to a class taught by Dr. Eugene B. Weeks. Myrtle left the talk with a stronger faith in God and a new way to pray. She said, "I am a child of God, and therefore I do not inherit sickness." When she said this, she believed she was going to get better.

Within two years, Myrtle did get better. Her family and friends were excited, and they started praying, too. Charles continued studying world religions and philosophies. He also studied the link between religion and science.

Charles and Myrtle started writing about their beliefs, and shortly thereafter Unity was born.

Unity of Phoenix Is a Tithing Ministry

As a tithing ministry, Unity of Phoenix give one-tenth of all we receive back to where we, as a spiritual community, are fed. Half of that regular monthly tithe supports the greater Unity movement. The other half — our "discretionary tithe" — is directed to community and global outreach organizations that spiritually feed our congregants. The Tithing Committee reviews organizations that have spiritually fed our ministry in some way, and also reviews charitable organizations recommended by our members. If you would like to make a recommendation to the Tithing Committee regarding a worthy charitable organization, we welcome your input and will lovingly consider your request. Recommended organizations must be a 501c3 that spiritually feeds the ministry in some way. (We are spiritually fed by that which inspires or teaches us, reminds us of the Truth and causes us to remember who we really are.) In addition, our desire is to keep our tithes more local (having the main impact in Maricopa County). A more comprehensive description of the criteria/guidelines we follow is available on our literature rack in the reception area. Tithing Recommendation Forms are available on the literature rack in the church reception area, or you can access a digital version of the form online. Please provide all the information requested in order to help us make the best decision
regarding which organizations we will select.
